Improve your PageRank!

Improve your PageRank!

To get higher page rank on the search engines you must use relevant keywords that represent what you are promoting on the internet. Whether your promoting a product or service you must be descriptive not only for the general publics benefit but also for the search engines if you want to earn Top Positions on Google, Yahoo and Bing.

If you are submitting to directories, not only is it important to use the right keywords, but you must use the right categories to obtain maximum effectiveness. Your articles needs to have relevant keyword rich content to catch the editor's eye. Use your imagination here of what information the customer needs to make an informed choice.

There are some distinct differences of what the potential client and the search engines look for. The client may be impressed with the pictures, flash and scrolling text, however, the search engines look at content. The search engine spiders look for keyword rich text that describes the content of your website. A well done site will have the keywords in the title, first paragraph of the text and in the meta tags in your source code.

The content of your website is the only thing that the search engines are interested in. If you have all the bells and whistles on your site and don't have good content the search engine will ignore your site. Search engines are not looking for a good looking site, they are looking for valuable information .

We mentioned in yesterdays article the importance of choosing the right title. You must have a descriptive title on every page of your site. Each page should have a different title than any other page on your site. There is different ideas on how long the title should be. One of the major search engines states you should not exceed 60 characters and others say you should keep it under 200 characters. Your title should include descriptive information and should be attractive. Why? Because the search engines returns the title in the search results when a query is made.

You have some control on how the search engines position your site with the meta tags. Some search engines do not use meta tags for positioning, however, most of the major search engines do. So I would suggest that you use the meta tags correctly by positioning the meta tags within the of your site.

How you describe you website in the meta tags is important. How you explain what your site is all about is crucial. You must clearly explain in a short area of what you site it all about. This must be done in between 160 to 200 characters. Again the length of the description is different in many search engines. In my opinion if you keep the description less that 200 characters, you should be OK. Note: Only one descriptive meta tag should be used per page.

The description we used yesterday in our example would be a good descriptive tag if you were selling Mickey Mantle baseball cards.

Keywords are extremely important for the search engine robots. It is acceptable to use keywords or keyword phrases in this area. These should be keywords that a search engine robot would give relevancy to when cataloguing your website. These keywords is how people are going to find your site. There are different opinions of how many keywords you should use. I have seen some search engines who recommend only 20 to 25 works maximum. Others recommend up to 1,000 characters is still acceptable. Use you own good judgment....I normally use no more than 500 - 600 characters. You can use singular or plural words as your keywords. Try to use phrases if you can...not just single words. You can also use general wording or specific words that may be related to your website.

The subject matter we discussed today is found in the source code of your site and the general public will never see what we've talk about here. This information is for the search engines and will help get you recognized on the internet. Just remember, if the search engines can't find you....probably no one else will either.
